This isn't how you get a player to be invested in your world. It all feels pretty pointless, if I'm honest, and quickly taught me to just ignore NPCs. A drunk dude whining he got mugged (like I care) or the robot guy who helped you telling you about this rat race being atracked by frogs, which you'd already seen.

Usually they aren't particularly interesting or don't say anything much you didn't already gather from the world. Instead, characters talk at you with 1 or 2 pictures. except for when there is for very basic tutorial stuff (and not exactly the stuff you'd actually need explained either lol). Part of the problem here could stem from a very bad design decision they made. It doesn't feel like the world was designed to say anything, which is weird, because I definitely assumed it would be.

Other than very few obvious setpieces, it's all just trees and skeletons and cliffs, nothing of note. Outside of gameplay, the world is hardly even used for storytelling. It's really mindless and I found myself bored almost immediately, wishing I could run or do anything to be better entertained. It really just serves as empty space between dungeons and you simply walk, or dash if you hit a pit, between them. That's not the only problem, though, because you're also not really interacting with this world in any other ways either. Instead, I feel like I'm punished for wasting my time here. If you want me to explore, you have to give me a reason to. It's very frustrating and very badly made. Often there will be destructable things to slash at, but they don't actually give you anything when you do, even when it's storage boxes or grass designed to look exactly like grass in Zelda games. These areas offer nothing of note to the player outside of NPCs (which don't work since they don't talk), dead-ends that offer nothing to the player, and health restore pickups.
HYPER LIGHT DRIFTER ONLINE COOP SERIES
For the firmer, though.īetween dungeons, you go through a series of empty interconnected areas. This is in part due to boring design and in part due to other design flaws I'll mention later. The world itself has problems being interesting. I played Hyper Light Drifter for hours and I still don't understand what my goal is. Link is getting the Master Sword to fight Ganon and save Zelda/Hyrule, Gomez is getting cubes to keep the universe from falling apart, even games like Minecraft immediately establish that you are building to survive. This is the exact opposite of what exploration games need to establish in order to motivate the player to continue playing.

This was an incorrect assumption for many reasons.įirst of all, the game starts with a character you don't learn anything useful about who is doing things you don't at all understand the importance of. This has been my experience with other Indie games I've played and this one even seemed more suited for it than most. Some indie developer's passion project with charm and mystery and tons of interesting, unique things to discover. I thought this game was going to be a world-first exploration game. It's not a great game - it's actually quite badly designed - and I'm really disappointed. Well, frankly put, Hyper Light Drifter wasn't the game I thought it was and I honestly don't think it deserves the reception it got. After finally beating Fez recently (amazing game btw), I decided it was time and bought it on Switch. I'd been saving this game, since I'd always really liked the look and music, for when I got in the mood to sink my teeth into a new Indie game. I started Hyper Light Drifter recently for the first time.
