In fact, I just bought a BRAND NEW 17" MacBook Pro running 10.6 (and then updated to 10.6.2), and I decided to *COMPLETELY SKIP* the process of using Apple's Migration Assistant, just to make sure that I had a completely FRESH system with NO residue on it. From time to time, without any rhyme or reason, the login items will just delete themselves and completely disappear from the "Login Items" tab in the Accounts system preference. I've been having the same problem with my Login Items since 10.5, and the problem has not gone away with Snow Leopard.
